So you are looking for a summer vacation and you are just a little concerned that your teen may not enjoy it this year. It is important to remember that your teenager wants to have a great time just like you, it just takes a little extra time and planning. Teenagers have very different criteria than younger children, and you need to take this into very serious consideration in order for the family to enjoy themselves for the week or so that you are away.
Family vacations with teenagers
Going on vacations with teenagers can either be great fun or really awful! It all depends on whether the teenagers are happily occupied with interesting age-appropriate activities, and whether or not they are given a certain amount of teenage freedom.
It is important to chat about the vacation to your teenagers, find out what it is that they would like to do, and what is important to them. Some teens like cycling and roaming around the nearest town, shopping and eating out; others might want to swim, play video games or hang out at the beach. A large resort with a lot of space for walking /riding bikes is usually a good bet. Most teenagers like "freedom time", where they can roam around without parents watching their every move. If you are in a large resort this is normally very safe, and they are likely to find other teens to talk to.
If you only have one teenager it is a good idea to allow them to bring a friend. This way they will have a peer to talk to and have fun with, and you will not have to suffer a miserable and bored son or daughter.
A few ideas for vacations with teens
Sun River in Oregon is a great place for all ages. You can share a house with friends to keep the cost down, and often enjoy free swimming and tennis passes included in the price. If you rent accommodation near the village mall, your teens can walk to the mall safely, ride bikes on the trails, swim in the pools and have a wonderful time, they will love the freedom and you will have happy kids at home with you in the evening.
If you do look for rental accommodation, try to choose a house with enough room for everybody. Let your teens have their own room, maybe with a television and a video, and you continue to give them a bit of independence while still having them with you.
Westin Mission Resort in Rancho Mirage, California is a good resort for teenagers. It is very big, has lots of paths to safely walk around, great swimming pools and water slides. If you like the oldies, don't forget to have your picture taken under the "Frank Sinatra Drive" sign, or the "Bob Hope Boulevard" sign. If you feel the desire to get out of the resort for a while, the bike ride around Earthquake Canyon is a must. The ride is easy and only average bike riding skills are needed. Cyclists are given a bottle of water and are met with tasty cookies half way. A safety van follows all riders in case anyone feels they have had enough of the sun. At the end of the journey, the bike party is met with a really lovely cold milk shake. This trip takes no more than half a day and is well worth it.
Walt Disney World For Teens is fun. Just because they are older does not mean they will not enjoy it. Much of the entertainment is designed with teenagers in mind, like the Disney Market, the West Side or Pleasure Island, and many teens hang out there during the day.
Static mobile home holidays are a great way to vacation, especially if you are thinking of traveling to Europe and would like something all in when you get there. Set in beautiful parks everything is inclusive accept the food. There are clubs and entertainment for all ages, pools, movies, shops, stage shows, not to mention the wonderful sites and tourist attractions of the surrounding towns. These parks have acres of land to play on and there are plenty of friends to be be made. (Good for the whole family.)
If you are looking for a fun vacation that is within your budget, try checking out websites like Expedia, TravelZoo or Bookit. These sites will show you what is available based on your own criteria. You can also find a travel agent, they do still exist even in this technological world, and they can give you that personal touch.
Keep asking your teens what type of vacation they would enjoy, and, if you think it could be fun and affordable, see if you can find it.
